Oxford International's Student Global Mobility Index — drawn from 17,925 Indian respondents — finds 81% plan to return to India after studying overseas and 88% would be the first in their family to study abroad; Indian overseas enrolments fell 5.7% in 2025 and interest is diversifying toward European and Asian alternatives (13 August). Self-motivated decision-making rose sharply from 29% (2023/24) to 49% (2025/26) while family influence fell from 59% to 36%; 70% pursue postgraduate study with business/management at 75% of preferences, and only 6% cite fees as a concern. Australia's 42% visa refusal rate for Indian applicants and $2,500 student visa charge sit as structural barriers to capturing this market as it diversifies away from traditional English-speaking destinations.
